Distinguished and Famous people from Barunga West

Barunga West's notable connections include a footballer raised around Port Broughton and a volunteer who helped establish its emergency-service capability. Their achievements have been recognised in very different arenas.

🏅 George Hewett

George Hewett grew up in Port Broughton and played for Broughton-Mundoora before progressing through North Adelaide to the AFL. He played with Sydney before joining Carlton after the 2021 season. The Swans' account of his childhood describes improvised goalposts in the family paddock and games with his brothers. Those local beginnings preceded a career as a reliable midfielder, with his Port Broughton club still recorded in his recruitment history.

🤝 Jeffery Kerley

Jeffery Kerley was an inaugural member of the Port Broughton State Emergency Service unit when it began in 1992. He became unit manager in 1997 and helped with recruitment, training and the development of a new SES building. In 2008 he was a joint recipient of the district's Citizen of the Year award. His contribution strengthened the equipment, skills and membership needed for a local emergency response, work that largely happens before anyone needs to call for help.
